"ma(I)d" was created as part of "Here we Live and Now" at Korzo Theater in the Hague and premiered in january 2007. the piece is based on the character Solange from Jean Genet's "the Maids" which in turn was based on an infamous murder commited by the sisters Papin in 1920s France. the Papin sisters were servant girls in a large house who, after years of abuse and humiliation, kill their madame and her daughter. in "the Maids" Genet explores how the sisters Solange and Claire prepare themselves for the murder of their madame and in doing so reveal the intricate power dynamic which exists between unequals. in ma(I)d, dancer Angelina Deck embodies Solange and investigates what happens to her character after Jean Genet's play has concluded when it appears Solange has accidentally caused the death of Claire. the older of the two sisters stands alone in the space of the house; her mental state where she confronts her deeds, thoughts and reality; and, the space of her constant, tormenting prison. it is an uncompromising story of how the powerless fall victim to situations out of their control leading eventually to self-destructive actions and a reality bleaker than before.
