coincidental tourist

in may 2001 i travelled through the netherlands on ten individual trips. each trip was arbitrarily chosen through three wheels i had devised.

the first wheel contained all the train stations in the country; the second gave me four options (right-right, right-left, left-right, left-left) to guide my first steps from the station once i had arrived; the third wheel dictated how many times (from 1 to 12) i would turn right then left, or left then right.

for instance: the second journey took me to deinum station in the northern province of friesland. once there i had to take the first path to my left and the next path to the right. i then had to take the next left followed by the next right a total of twelve times.

quite a simple method of travelling without knowing what the destination would be until you turn the last corner. it was around this last corner i set up my camera and took a snapshot of myself as the tourist, with my destination on the background.

the coincidental tourist truly travels without expectation and appreciates the journey more than the destination.
